Kan'eiji Temple on Mt. Toeizan was built as a place to pray for the safety of the Edo Shogunate and the peace and protection of all people in the country, based on the strong wish of the great priest Tenkai Jigen Daishi for a better country.
At its peak, the temple was one of the largest temples in Japan in terms of both size and prestige, covering an area of about 300,000 tsubo (about 1.5 acres) centering on the present-day Ueno Park (not including the 60,000 tsubo area of Shinobazu Pond).
KAN'EI-JI IMAGINATION JOURNEY" is a dedicated smartphone website that allows visitors to stroll through Ueno Park, once the precincts of Kan'eiji Temple, and enjoy an augmented reality view of the temple as it once was.
